Relocated Martin Shears gives Monterey County one of its strongest singer-songwriters.
Stuart Thornton - Monterey County Weekly
(Nov 25, 2009)
Relocated Martin Shears gives Monterey County one of its strongest singer-songwriters.
"Martin Shears is like a living jukebox"
"Polished pop for now-and-then people. Flashes of old New Wave reflect off the head of Martin Shears, who writes impressive songs and sings 'em with style."
"Do You Hear?" contains 10 hook-loaded pop gems with enough lyrical weight and wit to stand up to repeated listenings. Immensely catchy pop songs is this quartet's specialty. The band's sound is classic and timeless."
Scones songs are, for the most part, as tuneful as the band's covers, with "Every Day's a Saturday" and the melodic and nicely constructed "A Lot Like You" standing out. Both songs are bright and bouncy, with Shears and Owens teaming for smart, familiar harmonies.
Alice Available
by Foodie202
I got Alice Available a few years ago from some MP3 site that had it up as a free download of the week, and I have kept it on my 1GB MP3 player even though many other songs come & go off it. It is a great song. The 30 second previews of the other songs are also good, so this is another little-known but good band.
TOTALLY BRILLIANT!!!

Don't pass up this opportunity...you will regret it if you do! The music, lyrics & overall sound of The Scones is nothing but awesome! The faster tunes get you up and dancin' and the slower ones are just perfect! "I Wonder" and "Wouldn't It Be Nice" are just 2 of my faves! Excellent album. Most played on my iPod!
The Scones deliver a tasty power pop treat!

Great debut CD from this Arizona band. Full of heart, soul, sweat a lot of harmony and melody, Do You Hear is Power Pop at its best. You'll find yourself hitting the 'repeat' button many times on great tracks like Everyday's A Saturday, Alice Available, and A Lot Like You. Do You Hear? If not, have your hearing checked!
Put these guys on the radio!

Intelligent lyrics with catchy melodies. You'll find yourself singing along almost immediately. Proof positive that pop music needn't be dumbed-down and sugar-coated to be palatable.
Do You Hear? How could you not?

Straight from Tempe, AZ - The Scones are a band you can't miss, or live without. If the CD doesn't convince you of the raw energy and talent of this band, you need to have your ears checked!
Do You Hear? You've Gotta Listen!
author: Michael Zadnik
Do You Hear? will keep you listening over and over again. This CD is packed with strong lyrics, sugary melodies and solid instrumentation. A great summer CD to keep in the car. "Everyday's A Saturday" sets the tone and the CD takes off from there. Well worth a listen. Do you hear what I'm saying?
Sound alot like Squeeze

Not sure about comparison to Toad the Wet Sprocket. These popsters sound just like Glenn Tilbrook and Squeeze. Can't get Everyday's a Saturday and She's a Lot Like You out of my head. Stellar vocals, great pop sound, won't be trading in this CD.

When I saw them for the first time at "Collins Irish Pub" In Flagstaff, not planning to ither...I was totally blown away...a band like this in Az...I am from the East Coast...Frequent NYC bands in the past. This band has stage presence, talent beyond, Martin's vocals unbelievable, they all mesh so fine together! Everyone of them are talented individuals, which ceates a powerful effect not seen today with most bands, musicians! I have to say that the Scones: Do You Hear? Great CD. A very solid album with some really listenable, memorable tunes. I own it and I'd recommend it to anybody.
A perfect mix of catchy music and perfectly weighted lyrics.

This CD is the perfect album if you're looking for catchy tunes without the typical useless lyrics prevalent in pop music today. Instead, the Scones, and particularly Shears, have done an excellent job of speaking their minds without weighing down the music. It is the perfect mix of pop and meaning.
Excellent wordplay and snippets of biting guitar hooks
author: Beazle
The lyrics are filled with sly phrasing that are a definite nod to Squeeze, and by golly, sounds a lot like them. Very clever! "A lot like you" is so sweet it gave me cavities. This is a band that is solid and filled with so many pop hooks you'll want one CD for home and one for the car. Highly recommended.
The Squeeze comparison is dead on.

There are at least 4 classic songs on this cd. The others are just great.
